Travel to Mexico -- Is it Safe?
Today I am going to comment on the advisory put out by Homeland Security warning about travel to Mexico. I have heard all kinds of stories over the past 40 years of doing business in Mexico, but since they are always rumors, I don’t comment. This time it is our government that is misleading our citizens by declaring the whole country of Mexico off limits.
Now let me put this in perspective for you. Let’s say in southern California and into Arizona there was a drug battle going on between drug cartels so the Mexican Government advised all its citizens not to travel to the USA…. You realize that means no travel to New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, Houston, etc.
How silly is that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is it any wonder that some of our young people grow up not trusting our government? How about the thousands of young college kids that are on the beaches of Mazatlan this very day? How about my oldest son Johnny, who just returned from El Salto and Mazatlan? How will they treat warnings in the future put out by our government?
Why doesn’t Homeland Security tell it just like it is and quit hurting the whole country because of problems in three states with drug cartels fighting over territory? The problem areas are along the border from El Paso/Juarez all the way to San Diego, California. The real hotbed has been in and around Juarez. Almost all those that have been killed have been involved in drugs or drug-related activities.
Truth is, I have been advising Americans for over 40 years to stay out of the border towns at night. Now it is not safe to visit Juarez even in daylight hours. All along our border with Mexico, there collects an assortment of criminals looking for an opportunity to take advantage of a crippled chicken (gringo). It has always been that way and it will continue to be that way. DON'T VISIT BORDER TOWNS.!!!!!!!!!!!
In closing, let me address the 40-year-old rumor that Mexico is going to have a revolution and change of government. If I have heard this once, I have heard it hundreds of times over my forty years doing business in Mexico. This rumor is always among the people who just don’t have any idea what they are talking about.
Mexico has a democratic form of government just like the USA. Their presidents are elected for 6 years instead of 4. There are two major political parties just like the USA and they are the PRI and the PAN. The people go to the polls and elect the candidates just like here.
When the populace of a country chooses its leaders through voting then there is no need for a revolution because it is the government selected by the majority of its citizens. I have gone from a young guy hearing this stuff to an old man still hearing this nonsense.
In summary, we see no difference in the safety of travel to 90% of Mexico. I have never advised night travel on Mexico’s highways. I say “daytime only” and this strictly applies to highway 15 down Mexico’s west coast. Use common sense when traveling to foreign countries. Don’t be out and about after dark unless you are with people who are knowledgeable about the area you are to visit. For example, if you visit Dallas, Texas and rent a car, there are some areas you definitely don’t want to visit -- day or night; the very same is true in Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Miami. In my opinion, you have a better chance of getting robbed or hurt in the above cities than in most areas of Mexico. Why is it there are no travel advisories for the dangerous areas of these U.S. cities?
I remember a few years ago that it was not safe to leave the airport in Miami, as tourists were being killed and robbed. The point I want to make is in any travels outside the USA YOU SHOULD KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING, AND BE WITH PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
I can assure all our clients that we will never put our clients in harm’s way no matter what country. I will never send a client to a place that I won’t go myself or send any member of my family.
We are in daily contact with the office in Mazatlan, the fishing camps, and many local people in Mexico. We know a he-- of a lot more about our area of Mexico than a suit and tie bureaucrats in Washington DC.
Have fun with your fishing and don’t forget to wear the lifejacket.

JACK McCREIT WITH ANOTHER TYPE FISH....THE RED TAIL CATFISH |

Over the past 38 years we have always tried to make our fishing trips more fun. We have always tried to give something back to our precious clients.
Well, here we go again with another fun and exciting package. Both our Mexico fishing lodges will conduct a bass tournament for all of next season. It is called the “Tournament of Champions” and we will give away two free fishing trips every month – one at each lake. That’s right, incredible as it may seem we will award a free trip to the angler who catches the largest bass on each lake during that month. Fantastic and fun!
Each winner will be awarded a free trip plus a plaque with their name and the weight of the fish. But wait, that’s not all, the winning guide will receive a cash bonus. In addition to the trip and the plaque, each winner will have his or her picture put up in the respective camp on the Tournament of Champions picture board. Each winner will also have his or her picture put on the website and will have his or her picture in our newsletter.
Now, tell me what other outfitter is going to do all that for you?! Over the past 38 years we have blazed a trail for our clients and then other promoters followed. No one has ever done this before and we hope it will set a standard. I know it will be fun for every client as each cast could be worth $1,395.00.
Come on down next season and see if you will become a “champion”.
Ron Speed Adventures, in conjunction with Tru-Tungsten, had a drawing for a Peacock Bass trip to Brazil and a 3-day trip to Mexico at this year's Bassmaster Classic. Jared Miller of Norman OK was the lucky winner of the Brazil trip & William Campbell of Dewy, Georgia won the Mexico Trip. Congratulations!!!
This past season we added new 18-foot EXPRESS BASS BOATS rigged with 60hp Yamaha Motors to our camp at Comedero. Clients have "expressed" how much they like the big casting decks.
