Lake El Salto Bass Fishing
Ron Speed takes clients on bass fishing trips

Last summer when Salto filled up I sent out a newsletter to our clients saying Salto would be good again this season.  My prediction turned out right as we had great fishing once again this past season and it is still good.  We always keep our camp open at Salto until the summer rains begin the last of June.  This gives fathers and sons and daughters a chance to come fish after school is out.

Last week on June 8 Vernon and Davis Grizzard from Georgia caught 141 bass up to 10.4 lbs on white crank baits in 12 ft. of water.  Drew Daniel and Larry Walker from Arkansas had 90 bass to 9 lbs on citrus colored cranks in 15 ft. of water.

The lake has been great all season and those of you that didn’t return after the bad season the year before missed some great black bass fishing.  I recommend that you don’t miss another season at this great lake.

Lake El Salto bass fishingLupe Cota is still the manager, and still waking everyone up with his rendition of “Guadalajuara” when he brings hot coffee and orange juice to your room.  Cheeta is still the great cook and our team of guides remains the same.  The ride from Mazatlan airport is still 1 hour and 15 minutes over a 4-lane toll road for the first hour.  The ride is a piece of cake.

Also remember we have the only camp on the lake at water’s edge.  You don’t have to ride a golf cart or ride a bus 15 or 30 minutes to the lake.  Our clients love to sit our under the huge Capuli tree at the bar at water’s edge and have a few drinks and watch sporting events or re-live the great fishing they had that day.  I have never understood fishermen staying at a motel 30 minutes from the lake when they could have stayed at water’s edge.

fishing accomodations on Lake El SaltoWhen I go fishing I want to be right on the water if possible and stay in a fishing camp, not a motel.  I love outdoor barbeques on the lake.  There is just something special about being able to sit at water’s edge and watch the ducks and the fish move around in the shallow water.  It has a calming and tranquil effect on me like nothing else in the world.  Each cabin has a big front porch and rockers where you can sit and look at the lake but most clients go to the lakeside bar to have drinks and visit with friends.

In closing, let me say that we will have another great fishing season starting in October providing we don’t have another hurricane hit us in September.  Those of you who book to Salto can change to Comedero if we get flooded in September, so it is one of those win-win situations for Salto clients.

Why not call us today toll free at 1-800-722-0006 and get your special date before it is filled up?!?!

Lake Comedero Bass Fishing

bass fishing on Lake El ComederoThis season was absolutely fantastic with every client catching all the fish they wanted to catch.  There were hundreds of big bass caught and most were caught on topwaters.  It is hard for me to believe that this great lake keeps producing record numbers of big bass after 20 years.  For the past 7 years it has consistently produced great numbers of easy catch bass year after year, and still produces more quality bass than any lake in Mexico.

The other lakes in Mexico including Huites, El Salto, Bacarrac, Mateos, Guerrero and Agua Milpa, have had hot and cold years.  NOT COMEDERO!!!!  It has constantly produced hundreds of quality bass year after year.  Fishing Comedero is as close to a sure bet of having a great trip as you will ever find on any lake in the world.  Even the novice angler always catches all the bass he expects to catch.

Why is Comedero so great for so long and so constant year after year with no off years?  For me it is pretty simple to answer.  Comedero is very remote and never has had the fishing pressure the other western Mexico lakes have had over the last few years.  Also, the lake is so deep (300 ft. at the dam) that the commercial fishermen can’t hurt this lake with their nets.  That’s not the case with the other lakes.  Also, the clear water of Comedero is totally unpolluted as there are no towns or villages up on the headwaters in the state of Durango.  This area of the Sierra Madres Mountains in the state of Durango is one of the most remote regions of Mexico.

Lake El Comedero bass fishingLast season I was fishing with Ray Sasser who is the outdoor editor of the Dallas Morning News, and one afternoon we did not see a single boat all afternoon.  Where in all the world can you go and make that statement?!!

The lake record is 19.5 lbs caught by Ray Newman 4 years ago.  Ray believes the fish was much larger, as the scales bottomed out at 19 lbs; so he took measurements to have a replica made.  When he returned, the Texas taxidermist didn’t have a mold that big so he got a mold of the state record from Georgia.  Problem was the measurements using the length x the girth x the girth divided by 927 made the weight come out over 20 lbs.  This is a huge bass that would be the largest black bass ever caught in Mexico.  However, about 10 years ago we had a guide we called Francisco Grande that was fishing from the bank using a red plastic worm and caught huge black bass in the Chupadero area of the lake.  He took it to Cosala to sell and the weigh slip said 24 lbs.  That’s Francisco’s story and it is a good story that dreams are made of.  For several years many American fishermen have said they have had on bass over 20 lbs and couldn’t get them in the boat.  Many have predicted the next world record will come from Comedero.  I have always thought this lake had a chance to break that record.

The super strain of Florida bass I stocked in the lake were pure strain and not hybrid bass.  They came from Gary White’s hatchery in Van, Texas and tested by electrophoresis by Dr. Whitmore at the college in Arlington, Texas.  This strain has been a very productive strain of black bass, producing thousands of trophy bass.  I caught the largest 2 bass of my life at Comedero and they both were over 14 lbs.  One came on a black Chug Bug and the other on a watermelon Zoom lizard.  Both these fish were released back to the lake, as was Ray Newman’s huge bass.  In fact, all the trophies have been released back in to the lake.

In closing, let me tell you that Comedero is very remote and has only 3 access places to get to the water.  Due to its remoteness it is very hard to run an operation on this lake and that is the reason we were the only operator on the lake for 20 years.  Due to the difficulties we had no competition, so all the other Mexico promoters told clients that it was not safe to fish Comedero, scaring many away.  That is the farthest thing from the truth you will ever hear.  Truth is Comedero has the best safety record of any lake in western Mexico.  Fact!

Why not call your buddy and make a trip to this fantastic lake next season.  I can assure you that you will have great fishing, great food and service, and have the best time of your life.  Call us today on our toll free line at 1-800-722-0006 and get that special date for your trip of a lifetime.
Tournament of Champions at Lake Comedero and Lake El Salto
Mexico Bass fishing tournament

We have come up with a great new idea to add just a little more fun to our fishing packages in Mexico.  Beginning next season on El Salto and Comedero the client catching the largest bass each month will win a free trip back to fish either lake.

Just think every cast could be worth hundreds of dollars.  Fun Fun Fun.   You won’t be the only one excited about each bass caught as your guide will receive a cash bonus if you win the monthly tournament.

Not only will you win a free trip but you will receive a plaque with your name on it proclaiming you a champion fisherman.  The plaque will have the size of the bass and the name of the lake and the date.  You will also have your picture put up in the restaurant on the Tournament of Champions board.  We will also have your picture featured on our website and in our monthly newsletter.

How much extra does it cost to enter this special tournament????  When you pay for your trip you are automatically entered in the tournament so it’s free to you.  Just think each big fish you catch could be the winner for the month and each cast could produce the fish of a lifetime.

Lake El Salto bass fishing tournamentWe are always trying to think of our clients and making our trips more fun, and always trying to give something back to our clients.  To my knowledge no other outfitter has ever offered this kind of a tournament.  It’s true that our fantastic black bass fishing is fun enough but why not add something else to make the adrenalin rush run even more wildly.

This Tournament of Champions will be just a one season deal as we won’t offer it again next season.  Don’t miss this coming season!!!!!  Just a tip on this program – you might think of the Fall or Spring months where your odds would be much greater with fewer clients to compete with.

Pick up the phone and call us today to make your reservation for the Tournament of Champions.  The number is toll free 1-800-722-0006.
Brazil Peacock Bass Fishing

Brazil Peacock Bass FishingThis trip still remains the best international trip we have ever offered in our 37 years in the fishing business.  It is definitely high adventure fighting this spectacular acrobat of the Amazon.  The tremendous blowup on topwater lures makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck and within 5 seconds you realize that for the first time fishing you are not the one in control.

The mighty peacock is the acrobatic champion of fresh water and maybe salt water as well.  The silver king tarpon won’t compare in jumps to the peacock. It’s just a thrill to catch one of these spectacular monsters of the Amazon as you don’t know which species of the peacock you have tied into with your topwater.  There are many species of the peacock and many experts can’t agree on how many.  Some say over 20 different varieties or more, and some say 7 species.  We have only caught 7 seven different species with the Butterfly being the smallest but the most colorful and strongest pulling.

The Otter Peacock Fishing tour boatWe were the first outfitter to start houseboat trips out of Manaus, Brazil some 16 years ago and it has been just great.  Of course now there are many promoters offering all kinds of deals with a wide range of prices.  Some offer trips that do not offer a charter flight and these will be the cheapest, but your chance at a trophy size fish is almost zero.  Some offer tent camps which are pretty tough, and only the hardy and tough fishermen should do this type of trip.  The best trips are the ones that provide first class accommodations such as the huge “Otter” with its huge staterooms and is fully air conditioned.  However, make sure that the fishing is at least 300 miles out in the remote jungle rivers that have not been fished to death by commercials.  To reach these areas requires charter planes and that runs the cost up a lot.  So, don’t be fooled by the cheap prices in Brazil because there is a reason they are cheaper.

Our next season will start in October and run in to March with 20 trips planned.  A large portion of the trips are already almost full, so I recommend that if you want to go, give us a call at 1-800-722-0006 and reserve yourself a spot.

The Otter Peacock Fishing tour boatThis next season will mark my 38th year in the fishing business.  I have gone from a very young, dark haired outfitter to an old, gray haired outfitter.  It has been a wonderful ride and I am not through yet.  I have learned a few things along the way.

The greatest thing in life is your God, your family and your friends.  I can’t remember anything more fun than going on a fishing or hunting trip with my friends.  Back in the early 70’s I traveled with Albert Davis, Elbert Majors, Pete Peterson, Jerry Weidman and Jimmy Olive.  We made scores of checkout trips looking for better lakes for my clients.  Today I am the only one left out of my group of friends.  Oh how I wish we had done more trips together, but I still have my wonderful memories of those guys.

I would recommend highly that you get your friends together and make some outdoor trips together.  Fishing is a great, fun sport but it is not the same when you are all alone with no one to share your great times with.  Don’t miss a single season hunting or fishing as life is way too short.  When I was a young guy I just didn’t realize how short life was going to be.  It seems like one day you are young and the next you are old and gray.

I have been pretty lucky as I have gotten to do a lot of wonderful things and I am still in pretty good shape, and am looking forward to my next fishing trip.  I still quail hunt every winter and walk a lot with the dogs, but I still want some friends to hunt with me.

Think about getting a group of friends together and enjoy the fishing at El Salto or Comedero while these two great lakes are so very good.  I assure you that you won’t be disappointed and will have a great time.

And remember, if you are too busy to fish and hunt, then Mister, you are too darn busy!
